President Obama lifted NBC in the ratings on Tuesday as the first of the network’s two-part special, “Inside the Obama White House,” won its 9 p.m. time slot in the important demographic of adults 18 to 49.
NBC led the night by a wide margin in that age group, delivering the night’s top ratings over all during the 10 p.m. hour with “Law & Order: SVU,” which garnered 11.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s estimates. An hour earlier, the presidential special with “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams attracted a strong 9.1 million viewers, building significantly on the network’s 8 p.m. audience for “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” (5.5 million).
In total viewers for the night, however, NBC finished in second place behind CBS and its crime show repeats of “NCIS” at 8 p.m. (11.1 million) and “The Mentalist” at 9 p.m. (10.8 million). At 10 p.m., CBS’s “48 Hours Mystery” drew 7.7 million viewers. In the 18-to-49 set, CBS was runner-up to NBC and ahead of ABC and Fox.
Fox ranked third for the night in both total viewers and the 18-to-49 demographic with a repeat of “House” (4.1 million) followed by “Mental” at 9 p.m. (5 million). ABC finished in fourth place with back-to-back episodes of “According to Jim” during the 8 p.m. hour (4.1 million) and a two-hour ABC
News special “Earth 2100? from 9 to 11 p.m. (3.7 million).
