First lady shows off the arts - in schoolFirst lady Michelle Obama treated her fellow G-20 spouses to a morning taking in the arts. But not at a traditional theater performance or concert. She took them to the Pittsburgh Creative And Performing Arts School (CAPA), described in a pool report filed by Politico’s Nia-Malika Henderson as one “very cool” school that serves about 800 students from 6th through 12th grade.

The first ladies, 21 in all, toured the Blue Ribbon school, stood for a group photo and attended a performance by students and a few celebs.

School Superintendent Mark Roosevelt, great-great grandson of Teddy, called CAPA one of the many “gems of the Pittsburgh Public Schools.”

The first lady told the audience that she and the president “strongly believe that the arts aren’t somehow an ‘extra’ part of our national life. Instead, we feel strongly that the arts are at the heart of our national life.”

The performances included a group of students singing a G-20 welcome song as Yo-Yo Ma accompanied on the cello and Trisha Yearwood singing her hit, “How Do I Live?”

Michelle Obama noted that another one of her favories also was there. “Sara Bareilles. I have to say, she is on my iPod. She has gotten me through many a day with ‘Gravity’ and ‘Love Song.’ I love her.”
