Pregnant Woman Pregnant Again
The National Partnership recently reviewed — in the Women’s Health Policy Report – the New York Times opinion piece “Pregnant (Again) and Poor” that featured the heart-breaking story of Nahomie Nercure.
Nahomie is pregnant, 30, and lives in Haiti with her nine children in extreme poverty. Her family resides in a $6-a-month rental “shack” (only four sleep on a bed) with no food.
By United Nations estimates, she is one of 200 million women around the world who have an unmet need for safe and effective contraception — which results in as many as 80 million unwanted pregnancies annually, 19 million abortions and 150,000 maternal deaths.
U.S. and international efforts to fight global poverty can’t succeed until women like Nahomie have better access to basic family planning services.
What do you think?
Should the U.S provide more contraceptive services in developing nations to help women like Nahomie and fight global poverty?
