When he heard that Katrina Kaif needed a dubbing theater for weeks on end to dub for Rajneeti, Sallu is said to have told the staff at his dubbing studio to just keep the studio at Kat’s disposal. He also told his staff to be patient with Katrina’s Hindi. So involved was Kat with the Hindi dubbing that she spent waking and sleeping hours at Salman’s studio till she got her lines perfect. And Salman hasn’t even presented Prakash Jha an extra bill for keeping the dubbing studio open 24?7 for Katrina. When it comes to Kat, Salman is all heart.

Salman, one of the prime accused in the infamous chinkara case, had to spend time behind bars in 1996 and 1998, and now that period of his life is being recreated in a film called Qaidi No 210. And guess who is helping with the research? Salman’s former cellmate, Mahesh Kumar Saini.

Mahesh and Salman struck up something of a friendship in the three days they spent together in Jodhpur Central jail in 1996. Ranjit Sharma, the producer of Qaidi No 210, was introduced to Saini by the jailor during the course of his research and now he has taken him onboard as a consultant.

“I spent quite some time researching the subject and met many people in Jodhpur Central jail. That’s where I also met Mahesh Kumar Saini, a murder suspect,” said Ranjit Sharma. “I told him to get in touch with me whenever he was released.

He got in touch some months ago and he has given me details about Salman’s stay in the jail. Chirag Patil, son of former cricketer Sandeep Patil, will play Salman.”

Mahesh himself is all praise for Salman and convinced about his innocence. “All I can say is that Salman is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. I know for a fact that he is innocent. I can’t reveal more because he had told me everything in confidence, but Salman never fired that shot (which killed the chinkara).

He is going through hell to save someone else. I don’t think he ever expected this incident to become such a controversial matter and that even political bigwigs would play dirty. But one day justice will be done,” he said.

Recounting the three days he spent with Salman in jail, Mahesh said, “On the first day, he was tense.

I was the jail monitor, so I chatted with him and took him for a prison tour.” Several interesting aspects about Salman revealed by Mahesh may finally make their way to the script as well. “Salman is addicted to coffee. He wanted one cup every hour.

He hardly ate anything except the chocolates his brother Sohail had given him. He had many visitors. The ones I knew were his sister Alvira and brother Sohail. On the second night, I made soyabean and we ate together.”

Mahesh says Salman even managed to exercise in the jail. “We managed to sneak in dumb bells for him though they are not allowed. On the second day he was feeling bored. I arranged a carrom board for him and even a chess board.”

When Salman was finally released on bail, he offered to give Mahesh Rs 20,000 as a token of his appreciation. “I told him I can’t take the money, but I’d be grateful if he could find me a job when I got out. Salman said he’d do the needful, but I have to reach him.

I hope to meet him someday because I know a person like him will honour his word,” said Mahesh.

“There are rumors that I changed my stance after I received a phone call. I have not taken any U-turn and I maintain my stance.” Sharif told the newsman.

The unit was shooting at the Melbourne International Airport, and there was a certain area where immigrants weren’t allowed to enter. The authorities could grant only fifteen people entry to the restricted area, so the director had to take his entourage along, and leave the stars staff behind. And with that, all their starry tantrums too. Sallu and Kareena held on to their own vanity cases and sportingly went along with it, without giving the director a hard time.

We love such no-nonsense, no nakhras kinda stars, don’t we?

The rumour that her daughter, Samaira, might have a little sibling soon is also strong, after sis Kareena reportedly told the media that she’s very excited about her sister expecting a second child. At a recent Delhi do, when DT asked Karisma if the good news was true, she only smiled and replied gaily, “It’s something very personal. All I would say is that we are very happy at the moment.”

No denials, then. But Lolo’s got a lot to celebrate. She’s enjoying motherhood, she loved her stint on TV, she’s glowing and she isn’t ruling out a comeback to the movies either. As for that glow, is she a yoga person, like Bebo? “Surprisingly, no!” Lolo laughs, adding, “I know my sister endorses yoga, but I’m more of a gym person. I find yoga difficult. Kareena tries to get me to do it, but I manage to escape. I have a very healthy lifestyle. I’m not in favour of crash diets and I don’t deprive myself of anything, but I do have everything in moderation,” she says judiciously.

Okay, so not yoga, but is she into polo like hubby Sunjay Kapur, who’s a well-known polo player? But Lolo is content with cheering Sunjay on from the stands – she even says that she tried to dissuade him as she thinks the sport’s too dangerous. “It’s a very dangerous sport. No matter how experienced you are, anything can happen anytime, because you are riding an animal. So one person from the family is enough,” she says with a smile.

Karisma and Sunjay Kapur have the only charity polo cup named after their daughter – the Samaira Cup – which was held in Delhi. “Yes, I don’t know if we have it this year, but if it’s happening this year too, I will be there for sure,” said Lolo, during an interview to DT at a recent Delhi do.

And will she be doing movies again soon? “I’m enjoying my break from movies at the moment,” says Lolo. “Yes, David Dhawan is doing a script keeping me in mind, and I’m looking forward to it.” So is that going to be a David-Karisma style comedy flick? “Yes, something light. But, you know, it’s too early to talk about it.”

But the industry seems to have limited roles for married female actors. Does Lolo think she’ll get roles worth her salt? “I beg to differ on that,” Karisma says with conviction. “It’s not like that anymore – look at the lovely role that Kajol played in Fanaa. And then there are so many other avenues too, there’s TV, there are ads, etc.” says Lolo. “I’m happy that I saw the industry change. I was a part of the industry when things were changing. I saw it happening. I started with doing some not-so-meaty roles, but I did some very substantial roles later, like in Zubeida, Fiza and Shakti. There were some very female-centric films that the industry made and I was part of some of those. In fact, Biwi No 1 was a commercial film and was a female-centric film; even the title was Biwi No 1!”

Since Karisma says she enjoyed her stint as a judge on a TV reality show, would she like to compete in any of them? “No!” pat comes the reply. “There’s so much pressure on the participants all the time. There are no retakes, and if you make a mistake, there’s no way you can undo it. They’re under constant scrutiny all the time,” says Lolo. And what about allegations that reality shows are staged? “People do say they aren’t real, but that’s not true. Even we wouldn’t know what will happen next – like sometimes, the person that you liked would get eliminated,” says Karisma.

Lolo might not like polo, which her hubby plays, but she does like cricket. With many of her colleagues from the film industry getting into the glamorous IPL biz, is she planning to bid for a cricket team too? “I do love cricket as a sport, but no, we aren’t getting into it,” says Karishma.

When Aamir is in town minus Kiran, guess who he bonds big time with? None other than the ‘Most Wanted’ actor Salman Khan.

Salman invariably drops by at Aamir’s house and the two horse around playing boy games. Or they discuss art because Sallu loves painting. Sallu also personally invited Aamir to come and see his latest film; and when we last met Aamir, the actor was making plans to invite some of his close friends and catch a screening at a preview theatre right next to his house.

It seems to be the season of bonhomie in Bollywood. Look at the way the male stars are bonding these days — Akshay Kumar/Shah Rukh Khan; Aamir/Salman, Akshay/Sanjay Dutt. And what’s more, most of them with the exception of a couple are making sure the media gets to know about their bonding because it gives them terrific mileage
